My name is Abhayamati and I live in Cambridge, UK, in the appropriately named Old Abbey House, in a Buddhist community called Jayamandala. I moved to Cambridge in 2001 from Ipswich, my hometown, where I met the FWBO in 1987 and worked in the Evolution shop for about four years. Most of my time in Cambridge I worked for windhorse:evolution, mostly for the sales team as a salesman and organiser of trade shows.
Since November 2005, I have been working at the Cambridge Buddhist Centre, with particular responsibility for publicity. For the passed four years I have also been teaching Tai Chi in my spare time, mainly at the Buddhist Centre. In autumn 2006 I will begin training in Reflexology. I’m 31 years old, I was ordained just before my 30th birthday; in Order years I am a wide-eyed baby.
I took up Tai Chi and meditation at about the same time, following an intuition and with the aim of ‘calming myself down’. Before long, both disciplines delivered more than my aim and yet confirmed my intuition, and so they developed into a life-long path.
Ordination was a tremendous experience with a number of dimensions – some of them quite difficult – but all of them positively transformative and in their own way quite magical.
I was delighted to be given the Akshobya practice – the Buddha I now visualise and try to emulate – which has deepened a longstanding connection and perhaps gave form to the ultimate in ‘calming myself down’.
